Oh January⊠you get a bad rep every year, and honestly? It fits.
Youâre supposed to be a fresh start -
but youâre also a buzzkill, which is⊠not cool.
So hereâs your evaluation notice.
Why January Kind of Sucks
January asks a lot of us - emotionally, physically, and mentally - and then acts surprised when we struggle.
Here weâve just had an intense season of celebratory socializing and obligations, which might have been amazing, but they also come with -
Extra spending and financial strain,
Disrupted routines and sleep patterns,
Heightened emotion, nostalgia, and expectationâŠ
And then suddenly, everything stops.
No more lights.
No more gatherings.
Back to work, and nothing to look forward to for a while.
Plus the financial aftermath is covered with gray skies and seasonal affective disorder.
From a psychological & nervous system standpoint, that abrupt drop-off is a serious shock,
Yet somehow, in the middle of all that, weâre expected to start strong.
No wonder January feels so judgey - like that distant relative who just grilled you on âwhat youâre doing with your life.â
Sigh.
The Problem With Expecting January to Be Transformational
January carries an unrealistic burden.
We expect it to:
erase Decemberâs exhaustion
fuel massive behavior change
deliver motivation, clarity, and discipline
set the tone for an entire year
All while weâre still recoveringâŠ
Thatâs not ambition -
Thatâs pressure wearing a hopeful disguise.
Piling pressure onto an already depleted system doesnât create momentum - it creates resistance.
This is why by day three or four, many people are already thinking:
Why canât I get it together?
Why does this feel harder than it should?
Whatâs wrong with me?
Nothing is wrong with you.
Youâre just trying to perform in a month thatâs better suited for recovery than reinvention.
The noise has died down enough for reality to surface, so instead of fighting that honesty, what if we listened to it?
What If January Isnât for Becoming Someone New?
Hereâs a different way to look at it:
What if January isnât asking you to transform?
What if itâs asking you to tend to whatâs been depleted?
After a season of giving, showing up, spending, traveling, hosting, and holding things together, it makes sense that your system would want to slow down.
That doesnât mean you lack ambition.
It means youâre paying attention.
And faith doesnât call us to ignore our limits - it invites us to honor them.
Growth Has Seasons - And They All Serve a Purpose
In both faith and nature, growth is seasonal.
There are times for planting. Times for tending. Times for pruning.
And times for rest.
January happens to come at an ideal time for tending, which can mean:
Quiet care and simpler rhythms.
Honest reflection and more realistic expectations.
Gentle structure and financial recalibration.
Enough space to breathe and let your nervous system settle.
If you skip this season and rush straight into outcomes, youâll risk undermining the very growth you were hoping for, and:
You canât build a sustainable year on exhaustion,
But you CAN build it on preparation and steadiness.
Care now, prevents collapse later.
Youâre Not Behind - Youâre Recalibrating
So if January feels slower than you expectedâŠ
If your energy hasnât bounced back yetâŠ
If the idea of ânew year, new youâ makes you tired instead of inspiredâŠ
Thatâs not failure.
Thatâs your system asking for alignment instead of pressure.
You donât need to survive January.
You donât need to conquer it.
You donât need to prove anything in it.
You may simply need to recover well.
Let January Be What It Is
January doesnât have to suck.
But it also doesnât have to sparkle.
There will be time for goals.
There will be time for momentum.
There will be time for action.
This moment can be about care.
So January, itâs time to do what you actually do best - chill.
Readjust the bar.
Ease up on the expectations.
And be a little more honest about what people actually need from you, so you canâŠ

Interesting. I appreciate this, even while I like a New Year reset.
Iâve noticed in the last few years (which have been years of growth and healing), my mind naturally starts to evaluate around the beginning of November. By January I have an organic readiness for a restart - not an abrupt, whiplash one, but one of realigned focus. (But I also tend to keep Decemberâs celebrations and spending more gentle, since itâs what I can handle and enjoy.)
Agreed. I am not making any resolutions this year; I am focusing on listening to my body and resting as needed
